Allies - find expertise you didn't know existed

The project codenamed “Allies” started in Tallinn mid-2018 from a lunch debate between three friends. Shortly after, we were booking meetings with local software consultancies to understand their challenges.

We were intrigued by the complexity of the supply chain in the digital expert services space.

The paradox was: the need for niche digital skills is hidden within large organizations. They like to contract services from big IT companies who rarely have such skills in house. On the other end of the supply chain, the human capital with such expertise is scattered in talent pockets around Europe, out of reach from the ones with the demand. 

Is there a way to make the supply meet the demand, every time? Are shortcuts in the supply chain possible? Can Europe be considered as a single expert market, eliminating the regional and language specific silos? Can we make sure everyone wins? How? 

That’s what we set out to solve, as Allies.

We realized early on that the inefficiencies in the supply chain cannot be solved by starting another consultancy company. 

We envisioned a platform where actors from different parts of the supply chain would work together: the ones owning the demand would easily and safely find the expertise missing from their projects, the ones employing niche talent would get access to the relevant deals on the market that are difficult for them to reach on their own, and where the individual senior experts with unique skills could offer their knowhow into the most challenging projects.

First step was to build up a solid base of supply. We coded a simple product to allow small and mid-sized niche software services companies manage their talent pool, edit employee CVs and export/send them to their customers. Offering this with a promise to open up relevant dealflow from large buyers, we managed to attract small and mid-sized expert companies and gathered a critical mass of unique skills that could be offered to the customers.

Then, it was time to bring demand to the platform. We contracted with the large-size digital transformation companies in the Nordics. Companies with the visibility into the most exciting customer projects – whose challenge was to attract domain-specific senior experts with unique skills to keep the promise of premium service quality to their customers. 

When transactions started happening, we turned our attention to the quality. We started vendor audits, where every new talent brought to the platform gets screened. Our key account managers would verify each candidate prior to introducing them to the customer. We would monitor the market demand to attract new areas of expertise that customers were struggling to find.
